Hey there. I’m Jeff Keyzer, aka mightyohm.

A few things about me:

  • I’m an Electrical Engineer.  I studied Circuits and Systems at the University of California, San Diego (MSEE ’02).
  • I’ve lived and worked in some amazing and beautiful places: San Diego, California, the San Francisco Bay Area / Silicon Valley, Austin, Texas, and now Seattle.
  • I started my career designing radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for wireless LAN and cellular devices. Most of my chip design work was in GaAs, one of the lesser-known compound semiconductor cousins of Silicon.
  • In 2008, I started doing freelance design work in embedded systems, PCB design, and electronics prototyping.
  • This led to me being hired to design consumer electronics hardware at Valve. I designed the majority of the electronics inside the Steam Controller and was one of the primary folks responsible for bringing that product to market. That included setting up several PCB manufacturing lines in China and a fully-automated controller assembly line in Chicago, IL.
  • I’m an occasional guest-host of The Amp Hour, “an off-the-cuff radio show and podcast for electronics enthusiasts and professionals.”
  • Along with Mitch Altman and Andie Nordgren, I helped write a free comic book called Soldering is Easy that has been translated into over a dozen other languages and is used to teach people around the world how to solder.

I blog primarily about electronics projects that I’m working on.  Expect to see posts about microcontrollers (mostly PIC and AVR), Arduino, embedded Linux, circuits, DIY projects, and other related stuff.  Most of the projects featured here were born in my lab, but occasionally I will feature projects from friends of mine as well.

I also sell a few things that I designed, including a very popular Open Source Geiger Counter kit.

Aside from my obsession with electronics, I enjoy working on old cars, machining, welding, fabricating, and generally building stuff.
