Thursday, April 30th, 2009

The Bay Area Maker Faire is only 30 days away, and I still have lots to do on my Wifi Radio before it’s ready for the show.

I figure two weeks of slacking and two weeks of panicked chaos should do it…

Tickets are on sale, if you book before May 20th you get a $20 discount.  I hope to see some readers there, if you read the blog please stop by and say hello!

Maker Faire Bay Area 2009: Call for Makers

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Guess what?  The Maker Faire Bay Area 2009 Call for Makers is now online!

The Maker Faire will take place on May 30th and 31st this year at the San Mateo Expo Center (the same location as previous years).

Being in the Faire is an amazing experience.  Last year I showed off my techniques for building wiring harnesses and met many cool and interesting people.  Makers also get free admission to some special events surrounding the Faire including workshops and performances.

If you have an idea but you’re not sure how to present it or if it’s right for the Faire, come to the Make:SF meeting on Feb 8th and get help from other local Makers!

Proposals are due by March 31st.  There is still plenty of time to finish up that project you’ve been working on and submit it to the Faire!

Learn how to make a wiring harness

Friday, July 25th, 2008

“Wiring harnesses are an essential and often overlooked part of any electrical system. On a car, a good wiring harness can make the difference between a weekend joyride and a long tow home. Building a quality wiring harness requires a couple inexpensive tools and the right techniques…”

The Maker Faire is an event held twice a year (alternating between San Mateo, California and Austin, Texas) by the folks at Make Magazine, one of my favorite publications from O’Reilly. The event centers on DIY culture, covering everything from making combat robots to felting and needlepoint.

This year I participated in the 2008 Bay Area Maker Faire in San Mateo and showed people how to make better wiring harnesses for things like cars and electronic projects.

During the Maker Faire I handed out a one page tutorial with information about where to buy the tools and supplies as well as the steps needed to create a template and make a wiring harness from scratch.

Here is a pdf version of the  handout.

Or grab it in .png format, click on the image below for a full size version.
