Thanks. I'm loving the setup. I don't have a display attached to the router, but am using an old wifi-capable iPaq PDA I had lying around to control my mpd box.
Works like a charm, although the UI is a little slow and not optimized for non-stylus use.

Re: simple on-platform web interface
Presuming you actually need a license (which you only do if you want to have something to say about what people can and cannot do with your work), your could opt for something like the MIT license ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIT_License ), which is very permissive, allowing everything including c...

Re: Compiled trx file won't fit into flash
Alternatively, you can install packages that don't fit on the router's flash to an external USB drive. That's how I overcame the 4 MB size-limit. This does not require the router to boot from USB, but you do need to set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable to point to the /usb/usr/lib and /usb/lib directori...

Progress!
Finally. After some trouble getting stuff working with the latest stable OpenWRT release (8.09.2) and frustrating wait to get a DOA USB sound-dongle replaced, I am now, as I'm typing this, listening to the first sounds from my Asus WL-500G Deluxe-based MPD-box. I'm so stoked I had to share this :). ...

Re: for those of you having trouble as WPA2 client
OpenWRT rules, but the focus is definitely on a specific application (routers). Many things outside that narrow scope tend to require a bit more fiddling to get working, and that includes stuff like getting it to work as a client, USB sound etc.

Re: for those of you having trouble as WPA2 client
It is a known issue with OpenWrt that WPA2 does not work in client mode. I have no idea what the status of this issue is, and if/when it will be resolved, but for now, if you want to use an OpenWrt box as a wireless client, you are forced to drop to WPA. Note that with a key of the proper length (AT...

Re: Stuck on part 5
Not that I know what your issue is, but adding a port to a ping command doesn't do anything. Ports are a TCP-level thing, and Ping does not work at the TCP level. Can you wget a regular website page from an external site? What about: wget http://www.google.com/index.html If that works, but the mp3 f...

Re: Who was looking for boot from USB?
Just to add a bit to this: I tried getting my WL-500G to boot from USB as well, but it's just too complicated for my taste. So instead, I install the necessary USB-storage packages and install packages that don't fit on the router's own flash memory on a USB memory stick. The gotcha here is that you...
