Compensated tube?

Post by zaxasheats »

This is a total long shot, but is anyone aware of a compensated GM tube that would be compatible with the Geiger Counter kit? I'm not looking for great accuracy, but would like to generally log some equipment's exposure inside an industrial X-ray cabinet during operation. Nothing safety related, just out of interest.

Thanks, Matt

I haven't managed to get my hands on any compensated tubes, but in theory any tube with a bias voltage around 300-500V should work. Do you have a particular tube in mind?

I don't really have any particular tube in mind. My Google-fu has failed me. If I search for compensated tubes I generally get entire meters. I did find Themo sells an HP-290 which is compensated and 550V but it comes as an entire probe... which I suppose could be workable if I wired up the coax.

Do you have a good source for this kind of stuff that might have a compensated tube?

Thanks, Matt

Sadly, no - eBay is probably your best bet for this kind of stuff.

Ya lots of odds and ends. The SBM-20 seems to be the defacto. I might give it a shot with the 20 and see if I can use my real meter to do some correlation. I might be able to make a map to get me close enough for my needs.

Thanks for the responses, Matt

After more reading it seems like people like the LND 712 for X-ray stuff. I found a post from the folks who make the Monitor 4 that they wrap an LND-712 in tin and that makes it energy compensated. I'll have to do some reading on that.

The post where it is mentioned:

Some more investigation shows it's a 2mm tin jacket:

Looks like I can get an LND-712 for ~$100. Of course now the cost is creeping up to where I could just buy a meter and stick it in there.
