Internet Radio Streaming Audio ??

Post by tekspeek »

What a great project. Thanks.

First of all - Thanks to MightyOhm and TinkerNuts I have a working version of the internet radio. And, while I have been able to add a radio station, I can't add most radio stations to a play list.

I'm sure it's because of the decoding output of the streaming station (MP3, WMA etc.) but I'm lost trying to figure out how to even start decoding these stations. Can someone either explain this or direct me to a site that will help?

Thanks,

Can you give us some examples of streams that don't work?

I have two examples, one that works (streams) and one that does not. These are both NPR stations -

This address works:http://sc1.mainstreamnetwork.com:9042
This address does not work (on the wifi radio project): http://www.npr.org/player/v2/mediaPlaye ... list=false

I have tried a number of other stations - domestic and foreign (BBC) and can't get them to work.

Thanks for your help.

That NPR address you provide is a flash-based player. It will never work with mpd. That's like trying to, say, play a tape in a CD player. If you want to listen to NPR on your wifi radio, try these streams:

jeroen is correct.

A good place to find compatible stations is: http://www.shoutcast.com/

Thanks for the help but I still can't get most stations to play.

Example - http://yp.shoutcast.com/sbin/tunein-sta ... id=1377716
This is the shoutcast address for Minnesota Public Radio Classic channel.
I also went to mpr.org to get the mpr live feed:
http://minnesota.publicradio.org/radio/ ... eams.shtml

Neither feed works.

I have checked and rechecked what I'm doing. from the console I enter
mpc add http://yp.shoutcast.com/sbin/tunein-sta ... id=1377716
mpc play

and nothing.

Again, I'm able to receive some stations (see first post) but I haven't figured out the secret to adding more...

Thanks,

That is because the links you provide go to playlists, which mpd doesn't support (or at least not well). You have to add a single stream directly. In the case of the MPR link, the playlist contains a single item:

http://classicalstream1.publicradio.org:80/

which is something mpc/mpd accepts (At least, I tried it, and it works for me :)).

The shoutcast link you provide contains a number of items, the first of which is:

http://205.234.179.203:80

which is again something you can add using mpc (also tried that one).

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the information - I understand it at last!!!

For anyone else with my problem - how do I get the streaming audio address - it's not that difficult, following are the instructions. (windows)

This instruction assumes your audio player is WINAMP. Others may work but I found WINAMP to be really easy. It's also easier if WINAMP is the default player.

As Jeff recommended, go to www.shoutcast.com, select a station you want to listen to. Right click on the arrow <play> button.
in the pop up menu select 'Open in a new window'. If WINAMP is the default client it will open up and will play your radio station.
Press ALT 3 A window will be displayed. The line at the top of the window is the streaming address and port. Type that line in the command line (on the wireless router) or if you are using ARIO paste it into the Radio URL.
You my friend now have a working radio stream!

Now that I know this WiFi radio will do everything I want, I'm off to finish the project.

Thanks again - as I said this is a great project!

Thanks, glad you figured it out.

If you right click on the station in iTunes and select "Get info" you can also get the stream URL that will work with mpd.
