{"id":1714,"date":"2009-04-20T08:18:55","date_gmt":"2009-04-20T15:18:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/blog\/?p=1714"},"modified":"2022-12-28T12:54:07","modified_gmt":"2022-12-28T20:54:07","slug":"notacon-wrapup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mightyohm.com\/blog\/2009\/04\/notacon-wrapup\/","title":{"rendered":"NOTACON Wrapup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This past weekend, <a href=\"http:\/\/notacon.org\">Notacon 6<\/a> rocked Cleveland, Ohio with three days of hardware and software hacking, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.demoparty.us\/2009\/\">demo competitions<\/a>, opportunities to meet interesting people, get free stuff (including an awesome consuite) and participate in the chaos of a hacker conference in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Midwest\">midwest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This was my first trip to both Cleveland and Notacon &#8211; and it was totally worth it.<\/p>\n<p>Notacon had a lot going on at once.\u00a0 This worked really well for someone like me with a lot of interests and a short attention span.\u00a0 Over the weekend I witnessed many things, including:<\/p>\n<h4>The Game Room<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"margin: 2px;\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/3456342907_050f61d647_m.jpg\" alt=\"Hello Mario\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"margin: 2px;\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/3457157650_cc242b0c30_m.jpg\" alt=\"C64\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"margin: 2px;\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/3457168530_9dc49a807b_m.jpg\" alt=\"Game Room\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"margin: 2px;\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/3456357979_581b9f7082_m.jpg\" alt=\"Game Room\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This was a room full of vintage and modern consoles, Rock Band, board games, and people having a good time.\u00a0 I particularly enjoyed the Commodore 64 area which had some crazy hardware on display (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mightyohm\/3456338819\/\">C64 SD card to disk drive interfaces<\/a> and some ROM hacks).<\/p>\n<h4>The Demo Room<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/3457177068_a54339174d.jpg\" alt=\"Demo Room\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here members of the demoscene put the finishing touches on their demos for Saturday night&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.demoparty.us\/2009\/\">Blockparty<\/a> Demo competition.\u00a0 I think some demos were even conceived\/written entirely in the demo room over the course of the weekend.<\/p>\n<h4>The Hackerspaces \/ Hardware Hacking Room<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"margin: 2px;\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/3456346113_4e01a60b6a_m.jpg\" alt=\"Electronics!\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"margin: 2px;\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/3456343317_21eba585ab_m.jpg\" alt=\"Neon LED\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"margin: 2px;\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/3456342523_078ffe6dd8_m.jpg\" alt=\"Brain Machine\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"margin: 2px;\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/3456345161_642d5b3159_m.jpg\" alt=\"Soldering Iron\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Kylie tried out <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mitch_Altman\">Mitch Altman<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/makezine.com\/10\/brainwave\/\">brain machine<\/a>.\u00a0 People were pretty much soldering things together all weekend.\u00a0 There was a neon LED symbol.\u00a0 It was cool.<\/p>\n<h4>Ham Radio Room<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"margin: 2px;\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/3456349525_59f54f3c77_m.jpg\" alt=\"40m Lite II\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"margin: 2px;\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/3457167014_2ffa1c60a7_m.jpg\" alt=\"40m Lite II\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I bought a 40m <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wb5rvz.com\/sdr\/sr_lite_ii\/\">Softrock Lite II<\/a> kit from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.0x1.net\/\">Christopher Pilkington<\/a> (who also gave a talk on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.notacon.org\/speakers.html#Pilkington\">Hacking and Amateur Radio<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0 This kit receives 7 MHz radio signals and mixes them down to quadrature audio signals that can be decoded with a PC &#8211; a very cheap way to start playing with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Software_defined_radio\">software defined radio<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There was an HF remote control setup for a radio on the roof and an amateur radio license exam on Sunday.\u00a0 I was debating upgrading my license class to General, but sleep won out over the exam.<\/p>\n<h4>The Consuite<\/h4>\n<p>Free brownies.\u00a0 &#8217;nuff said.<\/p>\n<h4>Other Stuff<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.demoparty.us\">Blockparty<\/a> also took place during Notacon.\u00a0 I came to the con already pretty familiar with the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Demoscene\">demoscene<\/a>, having owned an <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amiga\">Amiga<\/a> computer (a very popular platform for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Demo_(computer_programming)\">demos<\/a>) in the 1990s.\u00a0 15 years later, I found myself at North America&#8217;s longest running demo party watching demos being screened at 3AM in the morning.\u00a0 How cool is that??<\/p>\n<p>Kylie and I met <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jeri_Ellsworth\">Jeri Ellsworth<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Sanger\">George Sanger<\/a>, who produce a show about prototyping stuff called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fatmanandcircuitgirl.com\">The Fat Man and Circuit Girl<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 If you haven&#8217;t seen it yet, check it out.\u00a0 They did a live show at Notacon that I found really inspirational.\u00a0 More on that later.<\/p>\n<p>I gave a talk about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.notacon.org\/speakers.html#Keyzer\">Hacking the WL-520gU Wireless Router<\/a>, and for my first talk at a major hacker conference I thought it went really well.\u00a0 For now you can only <a href=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/blog\/2009\/04\/notacon-slides-now-available-for-download\/\">download the slides<\/a>, but eventually there should be links to videos of all the talks on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.notaconmedia.com\/index.shtml\">Notacon Media page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In short: Great conference, great talks, great people.\u00a0 It was awesome.\u00a0 A+, would do it again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This past weekend, Notacon 6 rocked Cleveland, Ohio with three days of hardware and software hacking, demo competitions, opportunities to meet interesting people, get free stuff (including an awesome consuite) and participate in the chaos of a hacker conference in the midwest.
