{"id":2889,"date":"2010-03-17T12:53:46","date_gmt":"2010-03-17T19:53:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/blog\/?p=2889"},"modified":"2022-12-28T14:26:59","modified_gmt":"2022-12-28T22:26:59","slug":"austin-hackerspace-pics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mightyohm.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/austin-hackerspace-pics\/","title":{"rendered":"Austin Hackerspace Pics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/4436770731_2352bf3ef1.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Hackerspace\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><br \/>\nA couple weeks ago, I had the chance to witness the birth of a brand new <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hackerspace\">hackerspace<\/a> while visiting <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Austin\">Austin<\/a> for a few days.<\/p>\n<p>The aptly named <a href=\"http:\/\/www.austinhackerspace.org\/\">Austin Hackerspace<\/a> is located a few minutes south of downtown (on Ben White Blvd.) in an unassuming shop building (very easy to miss, look for the enDesign sign).<\/p>\n<p>By California standards, the space is pretty big (insert joke about Texas here):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/4437547632_5af13b6f49.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Hackerspace\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.austinhackerspace.org\/people\">founders<\/a> are taking an interesting approach to building the hackerspace.\u00a0 Studios are being constructed around the outside of the space.\u00a0 They are renting 1\/4 studio slots to interested hackers that need a place to store their stuff or work on projects in a quiet, air conditioned environment.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/4437538680_c4f844fa64.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Hackerspace\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Access to the common areas is free (as long as a key-carrying member is present).\u00a0 There are already some tools available for  shared-use, such as the large CNC X-Y stage (a work in progress) shown here:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/4437544770_66d11d2082.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Hackerspace\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is also lounge with a video projector for meetings (dorkbot!) and  some comfy  chairs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/4437541706_def9c74c88.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Hackerspace\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Drill presses and other tools (which I assume will be available for use in the space) are being temporarily stored  inside a large paint booth, which will also be available to members.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/4436763169_2823367254.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Hackerspace\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On my way out, I spotted some evidence that there will be some interesting hacking happening here in the near future&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/4436769031_78e806a6e8.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Hackerspace\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Interested in helping out? \u00a0 They are looking for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.austinhackerspace.org\/#what_can_i_do_to_help\">volunteers<\/a>.\u00a0 More photos are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mightyohm\/sets\/72157623505378895\/\">here<\/a>, and more info\u00a0 about the space is available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.austinhackerspace.org\/\">austinhackerspace.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A couple weeks ago, I had the chance to witness the birth of a brand new hackerspace while visiting Austin for a few days.
