{"id":3955,"date":"2011-05-08T18:48:51","date_gmt":"2011-05-08T23:48:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/blog\/?p=3955"},"modified":"2022-12-28T13:28:42","modified_gmt":"2022-12-28T21:28:42","slug":"test-jig-for-the-hv-rescue-shield","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mightyohm.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/test-jig-for-the-hv-rescue-shield\/","title":{"rendered":"Test Jig for the HV Rescue Shield"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/5701469806_cc888e3507.jpg\" alt=\"HV Rescue Shield Test Jig\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This weekend I threw together a simple test jig for the <a href=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/blog\/products\/hv-rescue-shield-2-x\/\">HV Rescue Shield<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The completed jig is shown above. \u00a0There are four header pins, one at each corner, that are used to align the \u00a0BUT, or board under test. \u00a0The Kapton tape insulates the two bottom standoffs from shorting against the bottom of the BUT.<\/p>\n<p>Pogo pins are used to make electrical connection to the BUT. \u00a0I connect to +5V, ground, 12V_EN, and 12V_SW (the +12V output).<\/p>\n<p>These pogo pins are similar to the ones <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ladyada.net\/make\/pogojig\/index.html\">Ladyada uses in her test jig tutorial<\/a>. \u00a0You can <a href=\"http:\/\/cgi.ebay.com\/ws\/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&amp;item=250655526141&amp;ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_763wt_1165\">get these in a wide variety of styles on eBay<\/a>.\u00a0I think the ones I used are P75-K &#8220;chisel&#8221; type tips. \u00a0They just happen to fit into the existing holes in the PCB with no modification.<\/p>\n<p>The height can be adjusted by melting the solder around the pogo pin and pushing it up and down. \u00a0I lost a couple pins when I pushed them down too far and let solder get into the spring mechanism. \u00a0Oops.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/5701475554_561f0a89cc.jpg\" alt=\"HV Rescue Shield Test Jig\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The standoffs are made of reclaimed screws that I had lying around. \u00a0Right now I am connecting to the pogo pins with clip leads, but I might make a more permanent test setup <em>someday<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/5700907165_be5420fe6b.jpg\" alt=\"HV Rescue Shield Test Jig\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To test a board, I align it with the header pins and push down. \u00a0Easy.<\/p>\n<p>Previously I was using something similar, but without alignment pins or standoffs, so it was challenging to align and push down the board-under-test with the pogo pins without the whole setup sliding around the bench. \u00a0The new jig works well and makes testing a large batch of boards a breeze.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/5700901775_4f4061c0e7.jpg\" alt=\"BUT\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s my current testing setup.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/5701502656_5d9b8137b9.jpg\" alt=\"Testing the HV Rescue Shield\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The output of the 5 to 12V DC-DC converter is shown on the top display (that&#8217;s my beloved Fluke 45 bench meter) while the power supply current is shown on the bottom. \u00a0The toggle switch on the bench just to the right of the jig is so I can toggle the 12V_EN line and make sure the DC-DC converter turns off too.<\/p>\n<p>This board looks good, and so did 29 of his friends. \u00a00% failure rate on this build! \u00a0I seem to have my process pretty much figured out now.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/files\/flickr\/5700899651_3d3c5c3a91.jpg\" alt=\"Tested boards\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This weekend I threw together a simple test jig for the HV Rescue Shield.
