{"id":614,"date":"2008-11-05T14:16:57","date_gmt":"2008-11-05T21:16:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mightyohm.com\/blog\/?p=614"},"modified":"2015-09-26T11:11:11","modified_gmt":"2015-09-26T18:11:11","slug":"noise-sensitivity-of-usb-serial-converters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mightyohm.com\/blog\/2008\/11\/noise-sensitivity-of-usb-serial-converters\/","title":{"rendered":"Noise sensitivity of USB-serial converters?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am experiencing a frustrating problem that I have seen using more than one brand of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diyautotune.com\/catalog\/usb-serial-adapter-works-with-megatune-p-67.html\">USB-serial converter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I use a USB-serial converter as part of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bgsoflex.com\/megasquirt.html\">Megasquirt<\/a> system on my car.\u00a0 When exposed to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ignition_system\">ignition system<\/a> noise on the car, the USB-serial converter will lock up and stop transferring data until I disconnect and reconnect the USB connection.<\/p>\n<p>Has anyone else seen this?<\/p>\n<p>Just today I mocked up my serial setup on the bench and used a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Van_de_Graaff_generator\">Van de Graaff<\/a> generator to create some broadband noise to try and simulate the effect of the car&#8217;s ignition system.\u00a0 Sure enough, eventually the USB-serial converter I was testing locked up.\u00a0 Same exact symptoms &#8211; crash.\u00a0 Without the noise source, the connection works indefinitely.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am experiencing a frustrating problem that I have seen using more than one brand of USB-serial converter.
