I used an old soundblaster USB soundcard that I had hidden away among some other old pc junk ( I actually have 2 of them) and they work perfectly.

Model nr is SB0270

I followed the Mightyohm instructions and the Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Go! Pro USB worked out of the box. A little pricey, but I had one already. Here's the link on Amazon:

Thanks for all advice!

I ordered the USB2.0 EXTERNAL 7.1 AUDIO PC SOUND CARD ADAPTOR PC204-1 on Ebay at Eupix, paid $6.99 including transport and it works! Although the site claims a CM119 it has a CM 108 as far as I can see on the packaging. No problem to me as it really works!!! No alsa needed...

this babies also work, although they have 48000 output only, they accept 44100 too. supercheap!
they say it's 6911 chipset, but it might be cm108, there's a marking "HX-108-0310" under the chip.

Yes, I can confirm that the 7.1 Channel USB External Sound Card Audio Adapter works. Here is the link to the one I purchased for $5.50 shipped:

Now I just need to find an old boom box to make this portable.

new guy here. I'm slogging my way through this build and wanted to report that the following USB - Toslink adapter worked for me w/no tweaks:

I needed an analog adapter for the setup I was targeting, and I found this one (Turtle Beach Amigo II) works nicely out of the box:

I ordered a bunch of these. TInkernut suggested them.

I got them for $.19 a few days ago. The price has gone up to $.23 though.

Wow. $0.23 for a USB-audio adapter?

Do they actually work? :D

I just followed the link that Tinkernut had on his list. I haven't personally tested them. They came today, so now I just have to wait until the wl-520gu arrives.
