WL 520 doesnt start up
WL 520 doesnt start up
Hi,
I've recently bought a 520gu from eBay(china seller) and received it this week, And when I'm plugging it in to the power it doesnt boot up or show anything in the hyperterminal, this is after I soldered the pinheaders on to the board since I didn't test it beforehand. It looks to me that the soldering caused the problem? But there is one thing that worries me, the broadcom chip gets really warm when there is Power on it ( here in holland we use 220 volts, but the adapter is made for both voltages)
What did I do wrong?.
Jeffrey

Re: WL 520 doesnt start up
Most likely you shorted something when you installed the header. Inspect the solder connections for bridges.
It is normal for the chip to get warm.
And it is always a good idea to test the router before hacking it!

Re: WL 520 doesnt start up
hi Jeff,
Thanks for the fast reply, i can confirm there are no bridges on the pcb see:

Could the header converter maybe caused the board to shorten something (due to crappy soldering of me, i've changed the layout twice and re solderd it)
i remember that yesterday in the terminal there were two similes displaying, thats all what it shows.
There are 2 leds showing up power and wan.

Re: WL 520 doesnt start up
I suspect that it is booting, but the serial connection is not working. What kind of USB-serial converter are you using?

Re: WL 520 doesnt start up
The one From lady Ada (FTDI) same as you have used for your wl 520 with hyperterminal ,But now I need to wait for the new router cause it just died about an hour ago (I screwed the pcb up ) I'll upload the pictures from the soldered prepboard tomorrow.
For now i've just need to wait, But since that there are other routers that would work I could try an other brand than Asus thoug?

Re: WL 520 doesnt start up
The router that works with my tutorial is the Asus Wl-520gU. The WL-500gU V2 should work too. I don't have any experience with other routers, you'll probably have to use a different firmware.

Re: WL 520 doesnt start up
No, it came with the Asus firmware. Did yours come with DD-WRT? If so, someone hacked it first...

Re: WL 520 doesnt start up
Hum… didnt test it beforehand, but why bother the information on the box was all plain Chinese, but I think it was a standard Asus firm.
The one that I bought now ( again from eBay ) is equipped with dd-wrt on it so I dont need a serial header wright ? Anyway I made another serial adapter, cause i don't like to change the pins on the FTDI adapter, the adapter looks more solid than before, soldered the 6pin on the perpboard and the 4pin to the asus pcb is connected by wire.
For now it's waiting for a shiny new one cause they are quite expansive here in holland, that's the reason why I buy it on eBay much cheaper about 38,87€
